In-person Mother's Group

This group is aimed at mother's with young children (under 10's).

If we take the risk and responsibility of feeling and processing our suppressed emotional pain, we feel peaceful inside and out.

Mothering can be a deep and rich experience of self-discovery, growth and wonder where we share a lifelong journey with our children, of mutual respect and appreciation. This requires a healthy heart and mind.  Unfortunately, many mothers feel alone, overwhelmed and bewildered in the experience. Even those with good coping mechanisms which keep them functional, feel the emotional load is sometimes too much.  This is not because children are bad, wrong or too demanding.  It's a symptom of our own childhood distress: disrupted bonding and attachment in early life.

Every child wants a secure emotional connection to their parents, if not, it's impossible for them to remain with their Healthy Self - they have to dissociate in order to survive. Dissociation results in further disconnection, pain and confusion which can manifest in many different ways.  Fortunately the human psyche is adaptive and we can develop survival strategies to manage our distress.  However, what starts as a short term measure to survive can become life-limiting if we don't address the underlying trauma feelings - of rejection, abandonment and betrayal.

IoPT demonstrates that when we as parents address our own early trauma, our children benefit from the changing relational environment.  With more space inside us to express our feelings, our children feel less burdened and feel safer to express their feelings. This enables healthier contact with ourselves and them. When parents concentrate on the health of their own psyche, they can begin to perceive the innocence of their children as well as their own innocent child-self.

Early trauma cannot be eliminated but our coping and adaptive behaviours can be transformed when we come into contact with suppressed feelings. Group work is important because a group can hold the experience better than any individual. In a group, the therapist is a point of reference, while the group offers an enormous additional resource; an experience of empathy, of being accepted and received. The pain that is too unbearable to be felt alone, is somehow bearable in the group.
